Chapter Eleven

Hunter curled up under a blanket on her sofa and made sure her toes were covered. Her head was as heavy as her entire body, and her thoughts were sluggish. She groaned when her phone rang and she saw it was Tony. He wouldn’t let his messages just roll over to voicemail.

“Hello?” she answered.

“Em called me. She said you’re not feeling well.”

The fink. At least she was keeping their bigger secret. Hunter sighed. “I’m not, but I’ll be better in a few days.”

“A few days?”

She was too tired to come up with an excuse.

“You were fine the other day.”

“I know.” She’d used the last of her reserves to do it. “It’s not serious. I just need sleep.”

Sleep. She dropped her head back against the armrest. Talk about the wrong word to use with him.

“Let me come over.”

No.

The gut response was instinctive. She was at her weakest right now. Her most vulnerable. She didn’t want him to see her this way.

“Rain check?” she asked.

Did he know the level of trust he was asking of her? Although he did let her sleep beside him when he was weaving dreams. She rubbed at the ache in her chest.

“Tell me your address.”

She’d been to his place, even stayed over, but he’d never been to hers.

“I’ll bring over some chicken soup.”

She almost gagged. “That doesn’t even sound good.”

“What does?”

Oh, he was sly. That wasn’t an acceptance on her part.

“Twelve hours in bed.”

His voice dropped. “I can make that happen.”

She groaned when the ache in her chest dipped to her core.

“Hunter, let me come over and take care of you.”

And he thought he didn’t have any powers outside the dream realm. Hunter realized how weak she really was when she found herself rattling off her address and telling him she was craving spicy food.

“I’m on my way.”

She let the phone drop from her hand onto the cushions and stared up at the ceiling. She should probably clean up. Her house wasn’t messy, but it looked lived in, with pillows strewn about and a heating pad plugged into the wall.

She just couldn’t summon the will to do anything about it. Her energy levels were tapped.

She couldn’t even find the will to go change or put on makeup. She was in comfy sweats and a Solstice Satellites T-shirt. She’d managed a shower today, but putting her hair in a ponytail was about as stylish as she’d gotten.

She hugged her pillow and, even knowing Tony was on his way, nodded off. She didn’t sleep, but she fell into that hazy in-between for long enough that the knock on her apartment door made her jerk. She rubbed her hands over her face.

She had to physically push herself to her feet and grab the back of the sofa to get her momentum going toward the door. Uneasiness fluttered in her chest. Well, this was a test now, wasn’t it?

She wasn’t sure who was taking it, though, him or her.

His knocks started up again, louder this time. “Hunter.”

She got that full volume when she opened the door.
